The 1st and 2nd PAAMES International Standing Committee Working Meetings taken place on November 30. 2003 and October 25. 2004 respectively discussed seriously the subjects such as the preparations of the 1st PAAMES Meeting, the recruitment of new members, PAAMES regulation and the next chairman society, and reached the common understanding.
The 1st PAAMES Meeting was successfully held on October 26, 2004 in Shanghai. Over 200 participants, consisting of the representatives, special secretaries and persons concerned from the PAAMES initiators of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Mechanical, Marine and Naval Architecture, and Chemical Division), the Hong Kong Institute of Marine Technology, the Japan Institution of Marine Engineering, Japan Institute of Navigation, the Kansai Society of Naval Architects, Japan, the Society of Naval Architects of Japan, the Society of Naval Architects of Korea, Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and the West Japan Society of Naval Architects, from the newly recruited members of the Chinese Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, East Asia Division, Jiangsu Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and the Society of Shipbuilding Engineering of Heilongjiang Province, as well as the delegates of the 4th Conference for New Ship and Marine Technology attended this important meeting. Being the chairman of the 1st PAAMES International Standing Committee, Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers presided over the meeting.
The participating member societies have had a deep and effective discussion on the current status and future development of maritime engineering, and unanimously agreed that, in the process of the globalization of economy, the development of shipping and maritime engineering, and the establishment of maritime network in the era of informatization have played an extremely important part in the economic, cultural and technological interflows in the various countries, and are, in the strong momentum, promoting the economic, cultural and technological development in the world. Thanks to its abundant natural resources, large population and profound human history, the development potential of economy, and the position and role in the global political, economic and cultural development in Asian and Pacific region are attracting more and more attention in the world. Under such circumstances, the positive attitude in the shipping and shipbuilding industries adopted by Asian and Pacific countries can not only make important contributions to the development of this region, but to the political, economic and cultural development of the whole world.
Based on the above understanding, the participating member societies have reiterated the objectives of PAAMES, namely to promote science and technology in maritime engineering, to support the development of maritime industry, to exchange scientific information, to improve the status of maritime engineers and to cooperate and collaborate among the member organizations, and proposed that all PAAMES member societies make unremitting efforts to realize such objectives.
The participating member societies have unanimously expressed the ideas that the PAAMES Regulation shall be scrupulously abided by, and the further exchanges and cooperation in all fields shall be strengthened in the years to come to make PAAMES as a representative organization in Pan Asian region and promote PAAMES as a top-level organization with full global recognition.
The participating member societies have unanimously agreed that PAAMES shall actively and steadily recruit its new member societies.
The participating member societies have expressed their appreciation and affirmation to the positive and effective work done by all the PAAMES member societies, and extended thanks to Shanghai Society of Naval Architect sand Marine Engineers for its efforts in making the 1st PAAMES Meeting complete and successful.
The participating member societies have unanimously approved the Society of Naval Architects of Korea to be the 2nd chairman of PAAMES, who will organize the 2nd PAAMES Meeting in Korea in 2006. It is proposed that the Society of Naval Architects of Korea will also organize New Maritime Engineering Conference (the 5th Conference for New Ship and Marine Technology) concurrently with the 2nd PAAMES Meeting.
The Meeting calls on all the PAAMES member societies to further strengthen the contacts, exchanges and cooperation, and to make more contributions to the development of Pan Asian maritime industry.
